A guide to distinguishing bioplastics, biobased plastics, and biodegradable plastics

Bioplastics, biodegradable plastics and biobased plastics are threee different concepts.

Bioplastic refers to a type of plastic that is made from renewable resources such as corn starch, sugarcane, or vegetable oils. It is a more sustainable alternative to traditional petroleum-based plastics, as it reduces the dependence on non-renewable resources.

Biodegradable plastic, on the other hand, is a type of plastic that can break down naturally in the environment through the action of microorganisms. This allows it to decompose more quickly than conventional plastics, which can help reduce plastic pollution in the environment.

Bio-based plastic is a broader term that encompasses both bioplastic and biodegradable plastic. It refers to any type of plastic that is made from renewable resources, regardless of whether it is biodegradable or not. Bio-based plastics can still be made from sustainable sources like plant-based materials, but they may not necessarily break down in the environment as easily as biodegradable plastics.

Biodegradable plastic can be certified by BPI (ASTM D6400), Din Certco(EN13432), OK Compost(EN13432). Be sure to check these certifications when purchasing.
